Yeah, they're powerful. AMuS reports that the Mercedes ICE alone can produce 700bhp.

I can't wait for the season to start.

I also can't wait for the media to stop using images of the 2012 Mercedes FO 108Z V8 engine when talking about them.

One of these was built to just do the qualifying, the other was built to last three full race weekends. Also remember fuel restrictions on the new engines.

I can't imagine the stress that motor went through.

Warmup, out-lap, hot-lap, in-lap, remove and discard.

This is what it must have looked like behind the teams garages on a race weekend - 1982

Those engines were built to last a single session. Teams would make tons of engines and throw them away after each use because they wouldn't last more than that. That is how they could extract so much power from them. A driver can only use 5 engines in the entire season this year. That is why they have lower power - for greater reliability. They could just as easily crank up the power on the newer ones, except they'd get a 10 place grid penalty for the driver.

Me too. I think Bahrain would tell us where the teams are with respect to each other. And also whether Renault & Red Bull have gotten on top of their problems. Even if they haven't, there are still 3 teams that can fight it out at the top come Melbourne.

Although in race trim they did still make 800hp, but they did probably only lasted one race.... Still impressive for a production block. In 1988 F1 had 150 liter regs, currently 100kg, and the Honda RA168-E still made 700hp (from Honda's published paper) on 2.5 bar boost.
Basically durability has improved a ton, add aero and the KERS parts (obviously simplifying) and there lies the difference in two and a bit decades.
